Let's Go Deep:
A year-long creative mentorship program for artists to create a cohesive body of work.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Frequently Asked Questions:
When can I register?
The next session of Let’s Go Deep is scheduled to begin May 2019. Early Bird registration will begin in Spring 2019, so be sure you get on my email list where you will be the first to know when registration begins.
The program is a year long… I worry about falling behind due to travel, work schedule, guests, emergencies, etc.
Fear not! The pacing of the program will allow you to find the timing that works for you in the space. The lessons are designed to be doable and flexible, and you can easily adapt and shift them to the events of your life. We’ll have only one lesson a month and one monthly support call, plus a one-on-one call if you’re doing the full-focus level. If you have a vacation or a crazy month, you can always do that month’s lesson the following month or adapt as you see fit—there is no “falling behind.”
I designed this program so that it wouldn’t overly tax the participants, because I know my own work cycle all too well: I know that I can work like gangbusters and ride the flow, but ultimately I need times of rest. Certainly this is true for all of us!
If you’re thinking things like, “I want to do this program, but I’m afraid that it’ll add one too many things to my plate or that I won’t be able to finish it,” or “Annamieka has all this shiny, happy, brightly-colored energy—I couldn’t possibly keep up with her,” or “I’m too young/old/inexperienced/experienced,” I want you to know that I’ll be showing you the behind to scenes reality of how I actually make my work. The fact is, I’m not full-energy all the time, and you will be seeing me figuring out how to go deep this year. We’ll be taking a vulnerable creative journey together.
I want to become a better painter. Will this course teach me to paint?
This is not a paint-like-me course. This is a course about strengthening your own creative practice and making a cohesive body of work. If you want to learn painting techniques from me, my Wild Wonder ecourse is perfect for you. Wild Wonder is a self-paced online course where I walk you step-by-step through learning my painting techniques, so if this is your goal, I urge you to take that course instead. Participants in Let's Go Deep will develop their own painting style as they follow my journey to reinvent my painting style. There will be lots of interaction among the group as we ask ourselves the questions about the work itself and hone our styles. We will all develop a new portfolio of several works to reflect our new style.
Why are you teaching this course?
I feel like I’m at a point in my career where I’m ready to let go of some of my older work and create a new body of work that feels more cohesive. I want to spend an intensive period of time with a cohort, similar to a BFA senior thesis year, developing a new style. I want to stop looking at my old work and the work of other artists for a period of time and get back to the foundation of my creative practice.
If you look at my new website, you might wonder where my portfolio is. The fact is, I didn’t feel like posting it—it’s time to create a new body of work! This is how I would be spending my year, whether or not I was leading this program. I think it will do more good in the world and for my process to share my experience with a motivated cohort of artists who have the same goal.
What kind of work are you going to make?
I don’t know. I have purposefully created a clean slate.
Tell me more about the portfolio review.
The portfolio review is going to be awesome! I have a vision of what a portfolio should be, compared to what a portfolio often is. Often, a portfolio contains a wide range of an artist’s work, showing work done over the years, in different styles and media, often created while studying with various teachers. There’s nothing wrong with this—it shows development and breadth. We also see the exuberant “Instagram” portfolio, where folks post all their work ever made.
The type of portfolio I’m talking about creating during Let's Go Deep—which I believe can take us to the next level—is a mindful, focused, cohesive portfolio. It can be as small as three works, or up to ten works or more. The point is that the portfolio explores your range and your voice in exploring a particular idea.
For example, I’m currently putting together a portfolio of Pacific Northwest-inspired botanical paintings for a gallery show. I’m also doing a portfolio of pet portraits, inspired by my sweet puppy.
Another type of portfolio could be about something you want to say, like if you’re interested in making art about feminism, global warming, or another cause or idea. You’d make a body of work and then select and refine what goes into your portfolio. Your portfolio is what you’re beaming out into the world. And - a portfolio says what kind of work you are available to do more of. So make sure your portfolio is calling in the work you want to make!
We’ll be talking about ways to put your portfolio together and where to go next. However, this is not a business or branding class. You won’t learn about making a website. Yet this will help all of those efforts, because the most important thing that an artist needs is a cohesive body of work.

Our monthly lessons will generally be on the First Wednesday of every month at 12pm PST, with a few exceptions, you can see the dates on the FAQ Section above. (Please note that I will be having a baby around the time we are starting up these lessons and so for the first month, there may be an adjustment to the schedule, but we will accommodate as needed and then get back to the schedule for the second month.) During these calls, hosted on the Zoom video platform, I talk through the month’s lesson as a whole, and then open it up to discussion at the end for whoever is attending live. I encourage you to attend live if at all possible, but if you’re not able to attend, that’s OK. The call recording will be posted in the online classroom within 24 hours after the call, so you can watch it, or listen podcast style, audio only at your convenience.
Live Q and A call monthly
You'll be able to ask me your burning questions about the lessons so you can apply the teachings to your own journey
The Q & A call will take place the second Wednesday of the Month at 12pm PST. Again, if you can't attend live, the Q & A call will be recorded and made available for you to watch, or listen to podcast-style. Everyone will submit questions ahead of time and those are what I will be addressing on the Q&A calls.

What's your refund policy?
There are no refunds. By signing up, you are committing to yourself, to your art practice, and to me for the year. Think of this like a super-valuable ticket that buys you one seat on the NASA rocket that is going to the moon (assuming that you have wanted to go to the moon your entire life!). Once you buy that ticket, you are going to be getting on that rocket no matter what happens! Kids, dogs, work, school, money, time, energy - it doesn't matter, you are going to show up and get on that rocketship to see the stars no matter what it takes. It will change your life forever and you'll always thank yourself for making it happen. That is level of commitment that I am asking for when you sign up for this program, and that is why I don't give refunds. Also I am running a business and that is not how the program works.
However, I am a reasonable human being and if something truly comes up and you can't continue the program, we will work it out in communication together. Thank you!
Am I gonna love it?
Oh honey, you're gonna love it - I promise! And, as with everything growth-filled and awesome, there are bound to be some uncomfortable places along the way. Stick with it. Communicate with me. Let me know how I can support you, how this program can support you getting the results that you wish to get out of it. Ultimately, it is up to you to implement this and make it a part of your life. But trust me, if you show up and do the work, you will get to a new place in your creative practice. For sure!
But don't just take my word for it...here are a few testimonials from past e-course participants!
"It was so freeing! I LOVE how Annamieka gave us permission to play. Such a lovely group of people, of artists who all made a safe place for all, to ask, to comment, to show and participate in each others process. So much support! Lovely! Familiar, lovely, colorful, supportive, and so much joy!
-Annemieke Bouwman, Netherlands (Wild Wonder e-course participant, 2017)
"I felt that Annamieka was accessible, and the pace of the classes-- the format, the step-by-step tutorials, I thought was organized perfectly. That while you are teaching a technique, you're really opening doors and windows to a way to see the world around us, and to interpret that world, via your techniques, but in our own unique manner. I just feel this class happened at the perfect time for me. I would recommend this course to anyone looking to expand their work, learn something new, or even try making art for the first time." -Carol Busseau, USA (Wild Wonder e-course participant, 2017)
"I had never done an online course and I'm such a visual learner so was unsure how it would work for me. Annamieka was such a delight to see and listen to with each lesson and interview. She's so positive and enthusiastic about her teaching . I was excited to see each lesson and watch her process as she passed it on to us. Thank you Annamieka. I would absolutely recommend this to a friend . This was such a fun course and so informative. You are so enthusiastic and available to help people in their process. I now cannot walk by a flower without thinking about how it could be incorporated into a piece of art." -Kim Wilson, USA (Wild Wonder e-course participant, 2017)
One year from now, you could have a strong, cohesive body of work, and an art practice that fits like your favorite jacket. Powerful & truly YOU. Now tell me, what's that worth to you? Let's make it happen!
